Is Purpose Calling You to Pivot?

June 30, 20253 min read

There comes a time in all our lives when we may find ourselves unfulfilled with our current circumstances.

Often this takes place at work because it is where we spend most of our lives. Changes can take place with culture, pay grades, turnover and so on. We may begin to look around and question … is this it? Is this what I want?

At this time, we may look at our options. We may decide to go back to school, pivot towards a different work environment, or we may be looking at entering back into the workforce after raising a family. If this sounds like you, maybe it’s your purpose calling.

I call this the purpose pivot. It’s probably one of the most exciting yet scariest times in one’s life. You find yourself faced with so many unknowns.

When we are choosing to pivot, we are not quitting. We are simply realigning with ourselves. Whether you are in healthcare, corporate, or a stay-at-home mom, there can be a nudge to investigate what that calling is. This transition can be led by monetizing a hobby, writing a book, or starting a business. This isn’t about a change in income, title, or status – it’s a transformation of the mindset. It’s a desire to feed yourself something bigger.

In the beginning, the first emotion to rise is fear. I remember this all too well.

As a nurse working in a hospital my fist fear was, what will people think? These were my friends, colleagues, and mentors … now I am leaving them to start a business? What will my family think? Even worse, what if I fail?

That was almost 15 years ago, and several businesses later I can say I am grateful to have endured those fears AND failures that accompanied the development of my businesses. These are mere thoughts we have. They do not have to become our facts that define who we are. The alternative is to stay stuck in a place that we have outgrown. WE may find this is a place that is no longer serving us.

One of the ways to combat this is to understand two principals.

The first being that not everyone is going to be aligned with your vision. Therefore, not everyone deserves to be aware of your vision. It’s ok to move in silence, by not sharing your goals with everyone as you sort this out. During this time, get clear on YOUR goals without any intrusions from others.

Begin by exploring your passions, talents, and your WHY. Why do you want to build this business or write that book? Knowing your why is your anchor. I talk about this more in the “Motivation in the Mess” course.

The second principal is to accept that you are going to fail. This is where the growth takes place. Give yourself permission to fail. We are so conditioned by society to see these beautiful images of lifestyles but often, we do not see the process and messy struggles necessary to achieve those results. The challenges, the figuring it out phase, and yes, even the failures.

As you begin to embark in this era you do not have to have it all figured out. Showing up is the first step. Show up for yourself and your goals. Bring what you do know to the table. Be willing to mess up and learn. It is where the growth takes place. As you navigate and grow through the process, you will find wisdom and resilience resides on the other side. This will give you the momentum to keep going.

If you are finding yourself on the edge of pivoting towards a new project, writing that book, or launching a business venture, you may be questioning many unknowns. You may be asking yourself, could I? Should I? The answer is YES!

This calling is not about just a dream; it’s a divine assignment. The world is waiting!
